The cost of time wasting

Writer's picture: Devon HavenaarDevon Havenaar

Have you ever heard the old saying “Boss makes a dollar, I make a dime, that’s why I sh*t on company time?

I bet you hear that almost every day. Another one I hear a lot and sometimes even catch myself saying is “Paid by the hour eh bud?” Yes, I am extremely Canadian.

Back on topic here. These kinds of comments and mindsets have a major impact on our company's ability to get jobs done on time and on budget. And if you still think that doesn’t affect you- you are completely wrong.

The way you work today directly affects your future employment. One more time- the way you work today directly affects your future employment. Some people struggle their whole careers to figure this one out, don’t be one of these people!

I recently got back from some leadership training that really helped me grasp this concept. I struggle often with pulling my mindset out of the employee mindset into the owner mindset.

If you waste 15 min to an hour each day at work it has massive financial repercussions to the industry. Let’s say 1 hour of your day isn’t contributing to the bottom line of your company. 15 minutes, to set up in the morning, 3x-5 minute bathroom breaks throughout the day, 15 minutes to clean up and clear out at the end of the day, 5 minutes extra on your lunch break and a 10-minute window that you got sucked into TikTok or Facebook reels. That 1 hour per day X 5 days per week X 50 weeks per year 50 an hour they are billing you out for costs 12,500$ per year of wasted time that is charged to your clients or the company’s profit if they cannot bill it directly.

This begs the question, how does this affect me? Well, I’m glad you asked. Companies learn trends when they see how quickly they can get jobs done and how much profit they made (or don’t make.) If your company continuously delivers jobs over budget and late you essentially are enabling your company to slowly die a painful death. If the company you work for can’t compete with the other one across town they will get all the business and you could be sitting at home out of work before you know it.

Now, the company you work for does have a responsibility to pay you a living wage and make sure you’re compensated fairly, trained properly and supported safely but we have unlimited potential as employees to our contractors. We are the ones that can make or break the job. We hold the power for our future success but also that of our contractors as well.

Most industries are becoming more efficient and productive but the construction industry is actually slowing down considerably. You can usually expect projects to be delayed or over budget. This is just widely accepted now but it doesn't have to be this way.

Challenge for the week:

Don't look at social media at all during your workday, try it a couple days and see how much more you can get done. Being someone who doesn't waste time is always a worthy goal to keep working toward!

See you in the pit!
