Habits

It’s been said in many ways before that your life is the sum of all the decisions you have ever made, good and bad.

Good habits have exponential results, bad habits hold you from your potential.

Where are you within this spectrum?

Here’s a quote from the modern classic “Atomic Habits” by James Clear

Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement. The same way that money multiplies through compound interest, the effects of your habits multiply as you repeat them. They seem to make little difference on any given day and yet the impact they deliver over the months and years can be enormous. It is only when looking back two, five, or perhaps ten years later that the value of good habits and the cost of bad ones becomes strikingly apparent.

Do you ever get sucked in by a bad habit? Do you ever do something you didn’t want to do, and don’t do something you had full intentions to do? Forming new habits that stick takes a lot of work and energy. Addressing your identity is key to changing your habits. If you believe in your mind that you can do something, your body will follow suit. If you miss a couple of days of your new habit it’s natural to feel like a failure but your success isn’t rooted in your mindset of never giving up but rather pushing forward and treating everything as a learning experience. We want to work to get out of bad habits, replacing them with good ones that stick and rewrite our preconceived ideas about ourselves. We need to attack our identities to help rewire our brains into doing the hard things.

If you don’t drop some bad habits and establish a few good ones you can’t expect to grow as a person and consequently in your career.

Humans would rather be miserable than uncomfortable.

What bad habits did your parents have that you’re now bringing into the lives of your children? What bad habits does your boss have that affect his ability to lead you properly?

Humans are creatures of habit. If you would argue that you roll with the punches and live in the moment, try taking a different way home from work or going to Subway and ordering a different foot long. It’s uncomfortable so we avoid it.

What's one bad habit this week that you can make harder for yourself to try and break? If we make our habits harder to do it becomes easier for us to break them. What’s one habit this week you can try to incorporate into your life? If we make the new habit attractive, it’s easier to form a new habit. Think small- 3-minute actions taken every day have massive returns over time.

Make this happen and see the results at your job site.
